As a customer of Austin Bank, you can count on us to be with you for happy times to celebrate success, for tough times to lend a hand, and for all the times in between when there's simply work to be done. Austin Bank is here, with you for good.
Major life events can be exciting, or it could be a time of stress. We hope the information provided below can be a help when you encounter any of these milestones in life.
Most of these situations will require a visit to your local bank in order to prevent any type of fraudulent changes being made on accounts. When you visit your local office, ensure changes are made on all of your accounts, including:
- Checking and Savings accounts
- Debit cards
- Loans or mortgages
- Investment/retirement accounts
- Online banking accounts
After leaving the bank, you may also want to follow up with or change your name with your employer or anyone else who initiates a direct deposit into your account, or an automatic withdrawal, as it may cause problems if the name they have on file does not match the name on the account.
Common Questions You May Have:
How do I update my address, phone number, or email address?
Keep your important details up to date so you never miss an important alert or notice - and to help us reach you quickly if we notice unusual activity or suspect fraud. You can manage these details easily in online or mobile banking:
- Primary and account addresses
- Phone numbers
- Email addresses
- Contact preferences
Or, you may stop by your local Austin Bank office and change any of these in person.
I just got married. How do I change my name on my account(s)?
Once you've gone through the legal process of changing your name, updated it with the Social Security Administration, and gotten a new driver's license or photo ID, then you can head to your nearest Austin Bank location to change the name(s) on your accounts. Austin Bank does require name changes to be handled in person, we cannot make those changes over the phone or internet.
When you visit your local office, you will need:
- Certified copy (or original) of filed marriage certificate
- Updated social security card (a temporary copy will work)
- Updated photo ID / driver's license
How do I add someone to my account(s)?
To add someone to your account, please visit your nearest Austin Bank location. If there are multiple owners on the account, all account owners must be present to authorize the addition of the new account owner.
All individuals being added to the account must bring a valid government-issued ID.
I just got divorced. How do I update my account?
If you are going through a divorce, Austin Bank recommends closing joint accounts and opening new individual accounts to help protect both parties and separate account access.
If your spouse has access to your online banking credentials, update your User ID and password immediately. This can be changed from within online banking under the Profile section.
To discuss your options, visit your nearest Austin Bank location with a valid government-issued ID and a copy of your divorce decree or other relevant court documents. A bank representative will be happy to help.
What happens if someone passes away?
When managing the affairs of someone who has passed away, we can help guide you through the next steps. To get started, please be prepared to provide:
- Date of death
- Account information, if available
- Your relationship to the account holder
- A certified copy of the death certificate
Depending on the account ownership and any beneficiary or survivorship designations, additional documentation may be required. We may also be limited in the information we can share until we have reviewed the account records and received the appropriate documentation.
An Austin Bank representative can explain the requirements and next steps based on your specific situation.
