Austin Bank Dedication of Flag Pole.

Thursday, as the clouds began to part from a heavy morning fog, Jeff Austin Jr. took a picture of the flags at Nichols Green Park. Why would Austin want to photograph the flags? Because Austin Bank donated the flag poles to the park for display at its entrance-way. In celebration of its 100th year in Jacksonville, officials with Austin Bank wanted to do something special to commemorate the occasion. Thursday morning, city of Jacksonville and Austin Bank officials dedicated a plaque to acknowledge the bank's contribution to the city. "Austin Bank was founded in 1900, and we wanted to give a gift to the city," Austin said. "This is wonderful, and I am very proud." Plans for the entrance began in 2000, according to Austin. The land for the park was donated by Robert Nichols. "As a community, the people come out and give, and that makes us proud to be from Jacksonville," said Jacksonville Mayor Robert Haberle. According to www.austinbank.com , Austin Bank, which was originally the First National Bank of Jacksonville, opened its doors Oct. 1, 1900. In 1996, six charters combined, and the name became Austin Bank. The original six bank charters were First State Bank, Rusk; First State Bank, Big Sandy; First State Bank, Timpson; First National Bank, Jacksonville; First National Bank, Whitehouse; and Texas National Bank, Longview.
